Fair Trade and Community Engagement. A Pop-Up Café at Algonquin College, Ottawa.

Towards the end of this winter’s semester, a dedicated group of community members at Algonquin ran the first-ever Pop-Up Cafe at the College in a heavily trafficked area.

The Event, which focused on engaging with the College community in a first person dialogue conversation about fair trade, was a great success. Over two hours, the volunteers spoke with close to 80 students in 2 to 5 five minute two-way dialogues, on the merits of the fair trade movement.

With wonderful coffee offered and fair trade chocolate from Alter Eco, the event was complemented by single-origin, direct trade, and certified organic Darjeeling tea courtesy of Tea Campaign Canada, Ottawa.

The outcome of the Event yielded great feedback and will hopefully be repeated in the future. Of note was the positive reception of fair trade by College community members and a desire to know more about the movement.
